The Saulier taken by Sian www.ski-physio.com

As the winter season draws another week closer encouraging evidence of early snowfall on the higher peaks arrived in my inbox and I'm stuck in a very wet Chichester trying to think of the almost endless things-to-do-before-I-return-to- France list in my head. I'm not going to bore you with the full list but instead focus on just one thing. SOCKS. According to some, socks, next to condoms, are the most important things someone doing a season can take. In an attempt to counter the effects of sitting around all day writing websites and newsletters I have started running in the evenings. If you can call 3km around the local rugby pitches adequate exercise that is. It doesn't help that everyone I know is either running marathons or completing triathlons and ironmans.

Anyway ever since I forewent the daily drudgery of office life over a decade ago and the need to wear black socks and dress shoes I have favoured a more comfortable walking shoe and smaller whiter sock. After purchasing some new ones I realised I have very expensive tastes in foot pads or so I imagine. Let me put things in perspective, there are ski socks on sale in certain Courchevel ski shops that cost over 100 euros, more than most English staff make in a week. I think they are made from vicuna and baby seal fur and surprisingly are quite popular with the well to do Russian holiday makers. By comparison mine are a relative bargain (and not made from parts of endangered species) but in an age when you can buy clothes from a supermarket fresh from a far east sweatshop(or so I imagine) I shouldn't have to pay that much for what are only socks.
