Issue 71

Say the phrase “Russians in a ski resort” and a long list of negative stereotypes usually follow. Nouveux riche, Oligarch, unscrupulous, loud, annoying, rude, aggressive, impolite, mafia, style-less, fur wearing, rich, impatient, hookers, villain, filthy rich and that’s just off the top of my head.

So why does Courchevel attract Russians like flames do to moths? It could have something to do with in 2007 a certain Austrian skier resort voted to limit the number of Russian visitors to 10% of the total number of guests at any one time. The locals claim Russian tourists lower the tone of the resort by their loud and brash behaviour.

So Russians have made Courchevel their home, at least for a couple of weeks, in the winter. So next year, when you are watching Henri Laconte Yevgeny Kafelnikov playing tennis in the Courchevel icerink or watching firework on the 6/7th Jan or just staring at some seriously hot Russian “student” be thankful for the Russians.

And then there were three

The eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed that one of the sculptures around town, the one with the 5 jelly babies, has been reduced to only 3. This is not down making it more representative of the modern family but instead to some light fingered individuals. Now excuse me for sounding old and sensible but I would recommend the people involved should return the items immediately as the resort doesn’t have a great sense of humour when it comes to matters like this. As the object is classed as a work of art they tend to call this sort of thing something like theft, or depending of the value of the sculpture grand theft (like the computer game but without all the guns and killing) and before you know it you will be sharing a cell with, and learning such sentences like “casser votre porte arrière po”, with a hairy arsed frenchman called Jean.
