Pompiers lower the shrimps onto the barbi

In the early hours of last Tuesday a fire broke out in one of the rooms of the Hotel golf. Over the night it quickly spread over two floors above the bubble and boulotte bar. Of course the rumour mill was working overtime with theories of how it started. Cigarettes on mattress, socks on heaters, black market Chinese fireworks factory, you name it and I’ve heard it. Basically small fire + mattress = a larger fire. Larger fire + wood roof = towering inferno. Luckily no one was seriously hurt although 2 guests suffered mild injuries. The downside of course it means that 1650 is now minus the Bubble and the Boulotte bar for the rest of the season. Bummer!

The Derby du Roc Merlet
In the true spirit of summer English sports and/or BBQs after a week of blue skies and blistering temperatures the heavens closed in and subjected the mountains to flat light and very high winds. It could only be time to start the Derby du Roc Merlet. Since my first Derby in 97 less than half have been favoured by the weather gods.

As a result of the high winds two things happened. Firstly the start was moved down from the top of Charnrossa to the bottom of the Roc Merlet chair and secondly most of the soft snow was blown away leaving an insanely fast course. After a few test runs down to Bel Air it was clear that for safetys sake a few tight GS gates were needed to slow the runners down.

For the second time this season, and much to the amusement of the rest of the racers, Louis(Surefoot) unveiled his gold one piece and was followed by Raab(New Gen) and Petit Pierre. Unfortunately Louis was piped to the post by the local favourite Arnaud. Privilege ski’s Archie Reid finished forth beating Raab by the narrowest .3 of a second. Scott(Ski Olympic) posted a very respectable time of 4:24 but was narrowly beaten by private instructor Al Hutchison by 3 seconds.

Ski Host, Joe managed to beat his older (and more frail) Mark Warner manager Paul by 9 seconds. Andy Lloyd(Le Ski) won the prize for the fattest skis of the day when he turned up with his Fork Tree skis

And finally, despite a freshly serviced pair skis from Intersport, in comparison I finished in an almost leisurely time of 5:14.

A big thanks to the ESF in 1650 for organising the event.
